The Mosaic Hallway at The Astorian stands as a remarkable example of exquisite craftsmanship and enduring sophistication. This impressive corridor showcases more than half a million carefully arranged “tesseras,” each piece contributing to an awe-inspiring artistic creation. The design draws inspiration from the ancient Roman technique of tile-laying, celebrated for its intricate detail and lasting allure.
Utilizing the same refined methods that embellished the grand edifices of ancient Rome, the mosaic in the hallway elegantly represents the geometric balance of the square within the circle. This artistic style not only conjures a sense of historical magnificence but also forges a connection between contemporary aesthetics and the architectural wonders of the past, including the iconic pyramids. In fact, it’s the same method you find at the Mosaic that was used to build the ancient pyramids!
