Everything You Need to Know About an LED Wall

A pink and purple LED wall is displayed.

An LED wall is much more than a standard wall covered in colored lights. It’s a powerful and effective way to create a vibrant visual display on various indoor and outdoor surfaces.

Beyond the name and how the wall is lit, though, what else do you need to know about them? Let’s take a closer look at everything you need to know about an LED wall.

Features to Look for in LED Wall Lights

LED wall lights have several distinct important tech specifications with several different models on the market. These include the following:

  • Display size
  • Brightness
  • Energy consumption
  • Type of LED used
  • Refresh rate
  • Pixel pitch

Of these features, one to especially focus on when choosing an LED wall is pixel pitch. Pixel pitch is the distance between adjacent pixels (each pixel comprises a red, blue, and green LED). If these pixels are closer together or narrower, you can get more definition from the display.

With modern miniature components, LED walls can have pixel pitches of a millimeter or less. This allows them a degree of graphical fidelity comparable to other video solutions like LCD or OLED.

SMD vs DIP LEDs: Learning the Difference

As mentioned above, another difference between LED walls is the type of LED used in its construction. There are two main categories to consider: direct inline package (DIP) and surface-mounted diode (SMD) technology.

DIP LEDs use cylindrical LEDs welded through the circuit board covered under a hemispherical dome-like lens to maximize light intensity. Each LED generates one color, requiring triangularly placed LED lights to create red, blue, or green as appropriate. This technology is most commonly used in larger outdoor installations.

Contrarily, SMD LEDs fit all three colors into a single square capsule to mount all three colored diodes. This is welded on the printed circuit board, creating an “all-in-one” display solution.

Ultimately, SMDs are better than DIPs at creating high-resolution images, making them best for more defined pictures at a shorter distance.

Choosing the Best LED Wall Light for Your Event

Choosing the best LED wall light for your event starts by working with a specialized and experienced supplier. They can help the customer find the best display for their particular event. But what considerations need to be made in making the best choice?

Location

The first question to ask before selecting an LED wall is where you plan on installing it. Is it indoor or outdoor, and, in either case, is it behind a glass window? With outdoor installations and ones behind glass, exposure is a factor to consider to mitigate glare.

Spatial Limitations

Next, you need to look at the particular needs of the intended space. There may be limitations on the space itself, the weight capacity, or available power supplies. Any of these can impact optimal LED wall light placement.

Hanging LED displays on a wall, roof, ceiling, floor, or free-hanging display has unique limitations and challenges.

Viewing Distance

Next, consider viewing distance, including the maximum and minimum intended viewing distances. This will ensure the most possible people will see this display in the most effective manner possible.

Content Displayed

Next, consider the content you plan to display on the LED wall. Is there a video component, photos, or text? These can impact needed visual fidelity and necessitate certain time or placement considerations.

Target Audience

Last but certainly not least, you should consider the target audience for this LED wall. Who are they, and where will they most likely look to get the most out of seeing this display?
